The Burlesque Astronomy Play

By Network Playwright, Sheila Cowley
Post-reading discussion moderated by Resident Playwright, Dana Lynn Formby

The Burlesque Astronomy Play is based on the heady energy shared by scientific and artistic exploration. The story is focused on the challenges that women face when balancing career and femininity. Andi is an astronomer, experimenting in her lab and trying to see if a nerd girl can be sexy and artistic. She’s dancing burlesque, and logging the results. Part of her experiment is dating Cal, an artist. Andi knows that art and science are two different worlds. Cal thinks they overlap, a lot. Andi's up for department head, when she finds out that she's pregnant. Science, she can count on. Space is what she’s longing to explore. But she's finding out the biggest mysteries are sex and art and her own femininity.

About the First Draft Series

The First Draft Series is an exclusive series of Tuesday-night play readings for and by Network playwrights. These are private, salon-style readings in which playwrights perform the roles and then discuss the plays in a format similar to that used in the Saturday Series. The discussions are moderated by a Resident Playwright or member of the artistic staff.
