Writers' Groups  - *groups will not run in summer session

Writing can be a very isolating experience. We know that writers often crave community, deadlines, and a safe-yet-stimulating space to share their work. Our various writers' groups are geared toward providing writers with those intangibles, as well as offering somewhat individualized groups for writers at different places in their careers. Some of our groups include the opportunity to have industry professionals as guests for the final four meetings.

Second Draft Writers' Group - Monday

This is an eight session weekly writers group for serious playwrights and screenwriters in who have studied dramatic writing and, ideally, participated in our First Draft program. In this group, up to 8 writers will present 10-20 pages on alternate weeks, providing feedback for their cohort, and honing their projects..

There is no teacher for this group, and participants are expected to work out a schedule. Staff support is available for this if it's necessary. Hard copies of the script pages for workshop – with enough notice – can be made, but staff (and the environment) appreciates efforts to share work electronically.

RAC  (risk, accountability, community) Writers' Group - Tuesday

This is an eight session weekly writers group for early career playwrights and screenwriters who have studied dramatic writing extensively, have a portfolio, and are looking for structure, community, and accountability. Up to 8 writers will present anywhere from 30 pages to a full length piece twice during the 8 week session, providing feedback for their cohort and honing their projects. An industry professional (director, literary manager, or dramaturg) will be present for the last 5 sessions to hear the writers' work and offer feedback.

Staff support is available for this if it's necessary.  Hard copies of the script pages for workshop – with enough notice – can be made, but staff (and the environment) appreciates efforts to share work electronically.

A weekly writers group for playwrights and screenwriters in their 20s who do not have a masters degree in writing but have taken at least one college-level playwriting or screenwriting writing class (or equivalent at Chicago Dramatists). Up to ten writers will share 15-20 pages of their work on alternate weeks, providing feedback and honing their projects. This group is meant to provide structure and community to people who are craving to finish and rework their scripts.
